What is the best mid-range electric car?

A comparison between BYD Yuan Plus, GWM Ora 03, Peugeot e-2008 and Volvo EX30

If in the entry-level segment the fight is “who delivers more while spending less”, in the mid-range the game changes a bit: you get more range, more safety, more tech and some extra comfort.

Here we compare four mid-range EVs that are already (or will soon be) in the sights of those who want to move one step above the cheapest models:

  • BYD Yuan Plus (Atto 3)a medium-compact SUV focused on interior space and nicer finishing.

  • GWM Ora 03an electric hatch/crossover with a strong value-for-money appeal.

  • Peugeot e-2008 a compact SUV that gained an electric version, with familiar looks and an urban-use proposal.

  • Volvo EX30a premium compact SUV, Volvo’s entry door to the EV world.

The rule is the same as in the first article: we will look at price, range and charging, standard equipment and differentiators, and in the end build a value-for-money podium.

Price range: who delivers more for what it charges?

GWM Ora 03

  • Sits around R$150–170k, depending on version.

  • Already comes well equipped from factory, with an advanced safety package.

Peugeot e-2008

  • Around R$170k in the electric version launched in 2024.

  • Price very close to the Ora, but with less range and a more urban-oriented proposal.

Volvo EX30

  • Line starts near R$220k and can go beyond R$270k in versions with bigger battery and more power.

  • Clearly a premium product, with finishing and brand pushing the price up.

BYD Yuan Plus

  • At dealers and in ads it usually appears above R$250–300k, depending on package.

  • Positions itself more as a family SUV focused on comfort.

Price summary

  • Best raw price relation: Ora 03

  • Mid price band: e-2008

  • Premium range: EX30 and Yuan Plus

Range and charging: who goes further with fewer stops?

GWM Ora 03

  • Battery around 48–63 kWh, with lab range of 300–400 km (which in real life usually turns into ~250–320 km, depending on use).

  • Accepts DC fast charging at decent power for the segment, going from 20% to 80% in under 40 minutes when the charger helps.

Peugeot e-2008

  • Battery around 50 kWh, with official range close to 300–310 km WLTP in newer versions; in practice expect ~220–260 km in mixed use.

  • DC charging around 100 kW, enough for occasional trips, but no speed records.

Volvo EX30

  • Offers versions with smaller and larger batteries, with range from about 300 to 450+ km WLTP, depending on configuration.

  • Architecture and charging power are very modern: DC fast charging is significantly quicker than on its direct rivals.

BYD Yuan Plus

  • Battery close to 60 kWh, catalog range around 400 km in favorable tests; in real use, ~280–330 km is a reasonable scenario.

  • BYD usually does a good job with efficiency and offers DC charging on par with the segment average.

Who stands out?

  • In raw range, EX30 and Yuan Plus tend to lead.

  • In range for each real spent, Ora 03 is very competitive.

  • The e-2008 sits a step behind: enough for heavy urban use, but less comfortable for frequent long trips.

Equipment and tech: which one feels more “car of the future”?

GWM Ora 03

  • Large infotainment screen with full connectivity.

  • Strong ADAS package: automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control (depending on version).

  • Interior with a retro/modern look that draws a lot of attention.

Peugeot e-2008

  • Typical Peugeot i-Cockpit layout, with raised instrument cluster and small steering wheel.

  • Good equipment list: multimedia, camera, some driver-assist features – but not always as complete as EX30 and Ora 03 in base trims.

  • Decent finishing, without being luxurious.

Volvo EX30

This is where the EX30 really shines:

  • Safety and ADAS package in classic Volvo style, focused on occupant protection.

  • Tablet-style vertical central screen with strong integration to online services.

  • Minimalist interior, but with higher-quality materials and feel.

BYD Yuan Plus

  • Well-finished interior, with design very different from the usual, lots of ambient lighting and good sense of space.

  • Large infotainment screen, with rotating display in some markets.

  • Reasonable ADAS package, though calibration may vary by market.

Highlights

  • In tech and safety, the EX30 has a clear edge.

  • In equipment list for the price, the Ora 03 is extremely competitive.

  • Yuan Plus bets on comfort and space; e-2008 on style and familiarity for those who already know the combustion 2008.

What makes each one unique?

  • Ora 03 – The ultimate value-for-money joker: good range, distinctive design, packed equipment and a price still lower than most direct competitors.

  • Peugeot e-2008 – A great option for those who want to move to an EV without changing “face”: it looks like a regular 2008, just electric. Ideal for urban and light highway use.

  • Volvo EX30 – The car for those who want a premium experience with strong brand image, top safety and cutting-edge tech, even paying more for it.

  • BYD Yuan Plus – Focused on space, comfort and a family-SUV feel, with good range and an eye-catching interior; speaks well to those who need a family and road-trip car.

Value-for-money podium: who takes the trophy?

Remember: the criterion here is the overall package (price + range + equipment + proposal). It is not “which is the absolute best car”, but which makes the most sense for most mid-range buyers today.

🥇 1st place – GWM Ora 03

Why?

Price still relatively accessible for an EV with this tech level. Honest, sufficient range for daily use and some trips. Very strong equipment package for the price band.

For whom?

Urban drivers who rack up mileage, want to ditch gasoline and want a modern car without entering the premium territory.

🥈 2nd place – Volvo EX30

Why?

Probably the best car of the group in safety, refinement and tech.Delivers solid range and modern fast-charging capability.

Why not 1st?

Much higher price; value-for-money works for those who truly value brand, safety and comfort, but not for everyone.

For whom?

Buyers looking for a first premium EV and who were already considering SUVs from traditional combustion-engine brands.

🥉 3rd place – BYD Yuan Plus

Why?

Good range, generous space and a very distinctive interior.Works really well as a family car that can also handle road trips.

Weak point:

Price gets close to (or even surpasses) the EX30 in some dealerships, which makes its value-for-money a bit less attractive.

Peugeot e-2008

It is not a bad car at all – far from it: pleasant to drive and practical in the city. However, with lower range and a price very close to the Ora 03, it becomes hard to recommend it as the “best deal” in the mid-range segment.

Conclusion: which mid-range EV makes the most sense for you?

  • If your focus is savings and tech for the lowest possible price, the Ora 03 is the natural target today.

  • If you want a premium experience and maximum safety, the Volvo EX30 climbs to the top of your list.

  • If you need a spacious SUV for the family, the Yuan Plus deserves a test-drive.

  • If you want something more discreet, with the look of a traditional SUV and urban-oriented use, the Peugeot e-2008 does the job.
